The Beeb reports that in Tuesday’s House of Keys, the Isle of Man’s economic development minister said he hopes the British Airways will make an announcement within the week.

It is anticipated the company will begin three flights a day between the island and London from March 2014. We look forward to hearing which airport British Airways will operate from as BA currently offers three weekend flights between London City Airport and the Isle of Man.

Mr Shimmin is reported to have said it will coincide with the end of Flybe’s Gatwick service. Flybe currently operates 26 flights per week to Gatwick from the island’s Ronaldsway airport. They will continue until 29 March 2014.

In May Flybe announced an end to its direct Isle of Man to Gatwick flights from April 2014 after it sold its slots at Gatwick to Easyjet for £20m.

British Airways is set to gain monopoly status on flights between London City Airport and Edinburgh.

The airline, which operates up to 8 flights a day, had faced competition from CityJet on the route (with up to 4 flights per day). However, CityJet have announced this week that they will discontinue flights between the 2 capitals from 26th October.

CityJet had flown the route since 2007 but had been making losses for some time now, unable to compete with the more muscular British Airways. It is not yet known whether British Airways will increase frequency or capacity on the route.

Commencing 28th October, British Airways will be adding additional flights from London City to both Madrid & Stockholm.

Both destinations are already served double daily from London City so both will be receiving a new, third service for the start of the winter season.

The new service to Madrid will depart London City at 12:50, arriving in Madrid at 16:10; the new flight to Stockholm will also depart and arrive at the same time.

These additional flights from subsidiary BA City Flyer are of course in addition to frequent services between Heathrow and Madrid / Stockholm.

British Airways is to launch flights between London City airport and Dusseldorf in Germany from 1st September.

Although British Airways have increasingly been promoting leisure flights out of London City (such as their new service to Granada in Spain), the airport is primarily used for business and Dusseldorf is one of Germany’s most important business centres.

Flights will operate up to 3 times a day (less at the weekend) using a Saab 2000.

Commenting on the new route, Luke Hayhoe, British Airways general manager at London City stated: “We have launched a number of new leisure routes from London City in the past couple of years. Now we are very excited to be going to a great business city like Dusseldorf which offers significant trade links with the city of London.”

British Airways has launched a series of promotional fares between London & Scotland starting at just £39 per person one way. British Airways operates from London Heathrow, London Gatwick and London City to Edinburgh, Glasgow & Aberdeen. The lowest fares apply for travel from Gatwick and is for those customers travelling with hand luggage only. These special offers coincide with the launch of Virgin Atlantic’s new domestic service between Heathrow and both Edinburgh & Aberdeen which we reported on here. At the time, we did suggest that British Airways would not take this new competition lying down……..
